"Silbihan"
Samantha
“SAMMAY” Dizon’s
silbihan is a
multimedia dance theatre
piece that seeks to
reflect on personal
experiences of
first-generation
Pilipina-American
daughters and their
migrant mothers from the
womb to present day. This
week-long curation
includes a writing
workshop series led by
three uniquely pinay
storytellers, a community
open mic centered on the
theme of
"silbihan," and
will culminate in
SAMMAY's performance
work of silbihan - all
leading up to Mother's
Day 2017. SAMMAY's
piece investigates the
(dis)connections between
mothers and daughters of
the diaspora through the
lens of religion versus
spirituality – centered on
the daughters’ discovery
of the
babaylan.

High 17 Writing Workshop

High returns for its 17th
installment!
Bindlestiff's
longest-running production
series once again nurtures
work from page to the
stage, culminating in our
fully-staged production in
August 24 - Sept2. We are
thrilled to have
Bindlestiff alum Christina
Ying as this year's
Writing Workshop
facilitator.
Christina
is an essayist, editorial
writer, and playwright
living in Los Angeles.
Originally from the Bay
Area, she’s also a
graduate from Northwestern
University’s MFA program
in Writing for the Screen
and Stage and was a fellow
with the Sewanee Writer’s
Conference. Originally
from the San Francisco Bay
Area, Christina has had
over a decade long theater
career with Bindlestiff
Studio as a resident
artist. It was with
Bindlestiff that she made
her theatrical writing
debut with her
monologue, The Word of
Oprah in 2010. Her
full-length play and
graduate thesis,
There’s the Moon and
Then There’s You
world premiered at
Bindlestiff Studio on May
30,
2015.
In
the Stories High Writing
Workshop, students will be
introduced to the craft of
writing for the theater.
With lecture, weekly
assignments, and in-class
writing exercises,
students will grasp the
fundamental concept of
scene structure, action,
events, voice, and
dialogue. Assignments will
include analyzing produced
play scripts and on-site
workshop of student work,
while also engaged in
their practice of the
writing process,
risk-taking, and refining
their narrative vision.
Students are expected to
develop a sustained piece
in weekly workshop
meetings and will receive
an individual consultation
with the instructor. In
collaboration with Stories
High actors, directors,
and producers, fully
developed scripts are
eligible for inclusion in
the Bindlestiff Stories
High stage
production.
Workshops
begin Sunday, May 28th,
11am-2pm, (Location TBD),
and will continue for six
consecutive weeks until
Sunday, July 9th.
Participants must plan to
attend the majority of the
sessions. Class size is
capped.
Tuition
for entire course:
$100-$250, sliding scale.
