SYNOPSIS
High school senior, Johnny Montalban, is a part of the exuberant world of street musicians in San Francisco. As Johnny sets a plan in motion to drop out of school to pursue a music career, his mother, Carmelita, only has dreams of him graduating and keeping a roof over their heads in their ever-changing SOMA neighborhood. When faced with losing their home due to rent increases and decreased wages from scheming boss, a history assignment based on the true story about how a group of Filipino Americans began the biggest agricultural labor strike in the United States inspires him to fight for the wages owed his mother and the apartment they call home. Through the help of a caring teacher, his love of music, and the strength found in the Filipino American Community, Johnny finds the strength to not only take action in saving his mom’s job, but he also finds the fire to not be another statistical drop-out.

Barrio Fiesta, FREE EVENT, May 20th

Volunteers Needed

Please join us for the SoMa Pilipinas Barrio Fiesta 2017: Ang Tao, Ang Bayan, Ngayon ay Lumalaban! with a tribute to the late Russell Robles, one of the original founders of Barrio Fiesta.

The event will be on Saturday May 20, 2017 at the Gene Friend SoMa Recreation Center, 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM

.

For the past 2 years our community revived a classic celebration started by our elders and the leaders before us. And after those 2 successful revivals and popular demand, we're doing it again this year!

Join us for FREE food, games, entertainment and community building!

______

We are seeking volunteers as all the fun, community building, and memorable experiences were and will be made possible by the community coming together. Here is an amazing video from last year's Barrio Fiesta created by Evelyn Obamos: https://www.facebook.com/evelynobamos/posts/10154203444658615

Shifts will start as early as 9:00 AM with set up and may last through 6:00 PM with break down. Please sign up HERE https://goo.gl/xBQjNi

Volunteers who commit to a minimum of 3 hours will be eligible to receive a volunteer T-shirt. Those who sign up by April 24, 2017 will be guaranteed a T-shirt. Due to our limited supply of shirts and sizes and depending on the number of volunteers we get, we cannot guarantee a shirt for everyone who registers after April 24, as they will be available on a first-come, first serve basis as supplies last. But we will try our best, and you will still get to be part of all the fun, food, and community-building!

If you have any questions about volunteering, you may contact caroline.calderon@vetsequitycenter.org, program@kularts.org, and glen@bayanihancc.org. Our committee will follow up with you as the event and our volunteer orientation approaches.
