Bindlestiff's Statement on the DACA Repeal

As an arts organization with deep roots in an immigrant community – SOMA Pilipinas to be exact – countless numbers of undocumented artists, audience members, and volunteers have passed through Bindlestiff’s doors. We have sought to be a beacon, oasis, and resource for immigrants in our community, regardless of their status.

With over 200,000 DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients in California alone, the announced repeal would directly impact a large number of people in our community. Bindlestiff, as well, will certainly feel the effects, as undocumented artists have lent their creative talents to us over the years. Their voices and narratives, their fears, ambitions, and, yes, their dreams have shaped our artistic history. Losing their creative energy, diligence, and potential would be a great loss, not only to us, but to the country as a whole.

Bindlestiff pledges to continue to be a beacon, oasis, and resource to all immigrants regardless of status, especially in the next six months as Congress seeks a legislative solution. If you’d like to join us in the fight to #DefendDACA, here are some ways you can help:

1) Contact elected officials in your state or representatives with swing votes
2) Educate yourself with this handy fact sheet.
3) Get involved locally.
4) Share your story or show your support via social media. #DefendDACA #HereToStay #Dreamers

SOMA Pilipinas Perfect Setting for World Premiere of WELGA, Oct 5-21

Bindlestiff Studio - located in the heart of SOMA Pilipinas - serves as the perfect venue for the world premiere of Conrad Panganiban’s Welga, a Filipino American coming-of-age story of a high school teen, Johnny Montalban, whose dreams of becoming a famous musician clash with his mother's dream of him first earning his diploma. Set in San Francisco's SoMA Neighborhood, the play explores family conflict against the backdrop of today's educational system, ongoing community pressures, and the legacy of Filipinos in the farm labor movement that sparked the 1965 Delano Grape Strike.
