     BINDLEBLAST ALERT

the latest news from Bindlestiff Studio

an epicenter of Filipino American Performing Arts

Congratulations Alleluia Panis!

Alleluia Panis and Gregory Silva in “Bayok” by Bagong-Diwa, 1975. CONTRIBUTEDIn recognition of her 40-plus years as an arts pioneer, Alleluia Panis will be awarded the first ever Artistic Legacy Grant by the San Francisco Arts Commission during a ceremony at Herbst Theater, tonight at 7pm. Bindlestiff Studio wishes heartfelt cheers and congratulations to Alleluia for being a trailblazer and a stalwart in the Bay Area arts community.

Alleluia first emigrated from the Philippines to San Francisco with her family in the mid-1960s. In 1985, she co-founded Kulintang Arts (KulArts), for which she currently serves as Artistic and Executive Director. Though she plans to retire from KulArts by 2019, she will continue to choreograph and produce shows for the Alleluia Panis Dance Theater.

We have had the honor of presenting her work at Bindlestiff, including the production of Incarcerated 6x9 this past May. Over the years, Alleluia has been an inspiration, mentor, and champion for countless artists, and this well-deserved reward is a testament to her artistry, tenacity, integrity, grace, and grit. Kudos Alleluia!

SOMA Pilipinas Perfect Setting for World Premiere of WELGA, Oct 5-21

Bindlestiff Studio - located in the heart of SOMA Pilipinas - serves as the perfect venue for the world premiere of Conrad Panganiban’s Welga, a Filipino American coming-of-age story of a high school teen, Johnny Montalban, whose dreams of becoming a famous musician clash with his mother's dream of him first earning his diploma. Set in San Francisco's SoMA Neighborhood, the play explores family conflict against the backdrop of today's educational system, ongoing community pressures, and the legacy of Filipinos in the farm labor movement that sparked the 1965 Delano Grape Strike.
