     BINDLEBLAST ALERT

the latest news from Bindlestiff Studio

an epicenter of Filipino American Performing Arts

Congrats Thuy and Bea!

Congratulation to the inaugural recipients of the Ebony McKinney Arts Leadership Award, Thuy Tran (San Francisco awardee) and Beatrice Thomas (Bay Area regional awardee). Thuy has frequently graced Bindlstiff's stage, most recently as a writer/performer in Bindlestiff's resident Asian-American women sketch comedy troupe, Granny Cart Gangstas. Bea's stage direction has been showcased in Queer as F*ck, and she has graciously lent her expertise to us as a highly regarded non-profit arts consultant.

Ebony McKinney dedicated her career to supporting leaders of color and increasing equitable access to the arts in the Bay Area and beyond. She had a positive influence locally and nationally before her unexpected death in July 2017. This award recognizes arts and culture administrators who address critical issues facing San Francisco's arts community and work to continue Ebony's deep commitment to cultivating artistic leaders. The San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) in partnership with Emerging Arts Professionals-San Francisco/Bay Area (EAP-SF/BA) presented the inaugural awards last night during SFAC's annual grants convening.

Enriching Workshops Begin in October

The Love Edition Writing Workshop will prepare students for the 6th iteration of Bindlestiff Studio’s signature show, The Love Edition, and its submission process. Through weekly assignments, in-class writing exercises, group workshop, and development of a sustained 10-12 page script, students will examine scene structure, action, character development, and dialogue focused on the theme of love. With an in-depth analyzation of produced stage works, students will come out of the course with a more polished script built on the process of risk-taking and exploration of one's voice and vision.

For more information and to register for the workshop, click here.

DALUYAN* is an interactive workshop, facilitated by Sammay Dizon, rooted in storytelling through movement, writing, and performance. Through activating our bodies as receivers of ancestral memory, how can we serve our own healing journeys for transformation of self, lineage, and community? Together, we will instigate the smells, sights, sounds, and somatic sensations residing in our respective vessels and re-discover how our DNA and lived experiences assist us in remembering and recognizing our intergenerational truths - which further our envisioning for the world we dream for the future generations.

*This workshop is for womxn of color and two-spirit/non-binary community members; folks of Pilipinx descent are especially encouraged to attend.

Bindlestiff's Fall Main Stage production of CHASING PAPELES, Nov 1-17

Tickets go on sale soon for Bindlestiff's Fall Main Stage production of Andrea Almario's Chasing Papeles, Nov 1-17.

CHASING PAPELES explores the undocumented Filipina immigrant experience using spoken word, music, movement, shadow puppets, and more.

After smuggling herself into America in a Balikbayan box, Leah struggles to reconcile her dreams with reality, and her attempts to build a better life for herself and her family are met with oppression, threats of deportation, and unfair (not to mention unsavory) working conditions.
