Do It Live Productions Presents
Phaedra's Love
Do It Live Productions is launching its second season with Phaedra’s Love, Sarah Kane’s disturbed reinvention of the Phaedra myth. Director Ben Landmesser is gearing up to scathingly expose our modern world to what Sarah Kane calls “her comedy,” coming to Bindlestiff Studios October 27th.
The Royal Wedding can suck Prince Hippolytus’ royal member. Queen Phaedra knows something’s been eating at her step-son, but secretly wishes she could take a bite herself. After his rebuff, she seeks solace in her daughter Strophe, who’s been burned by him too. Sex-addicted Hippolytus is framed for rape and thrown on a BBQ. Is it any wonder that Do It Live dubbed their second season, “Vandalize The Classics?”
In bringing Sarah Kane’s world to life, director Ben Landmesser hopes simultaneously to bring San Francisco audiences to their knees. “When the vandals sacked Rome, they chiseled all the noses and penises off the statues. That’s what Sarah Kane’s done to this myth.” Do It Live’s designers are mashing up the old world with the new to let audiences lob off a Roman nose of their very own. Spread out your hands, and see what you catch!
“All the characters in Phaedra’s Love talk about love, but they can’t express it,’ says Artistic Director Will Hand. “The play is about what’s stopping them from loving anything. In Kane’s world, that emptiness doesn’t just make people depressed-- it’s a cavity, it rots. All the incest, violence, and despair is Kane’s emphasis on how far this emptiness can twist you, like a dog tangled in its own leash.” At a time where the most listened-to individuals concerning social issues are the Kardasians, Phaedra’s Love will make the cast of Jersey Shore look like Family Circus.
SF’s ambitious new theater company, Do It Live, has been lauded for its aggressive treatment of Shakespeare and Shepard alike. “An ambitious and solid feat of theater,” Henry the Sixth, Richard Ciccarone, SF Appeal. “A darkly comical jazz noir, by capable newcomers Do It Live,” Suicide in B Flat, Robert Avila, SFBG. These scrappy insurrectionists are delivering another dramatic pile-driver in the wrestling arena of underground theatre, and this sanguine offering is the perfect opener to their second season, aptly entitled “Vandalize The Classics.”
“Vandalize The Classics” continues into 2013 with Gogol Dossiers, Sean Owens’ mumblecore redux of the classic Russian farce, “The Inspector General,” deviously devised with the Do it Live troupe.
PHAEDRA’S LOVE’s Cast includes -- Michael Zavala, Hippolytus; Whitney Thomas, Phaedra; Sam Richie, Doctor; Nick Medina, Priest; Aaron Teixeira, Theseus; April Fritz, Strophe. Its design team includes Jessica Chaffin, Scenic Design; Dwight Chesbro, Publicity and Graphic Design; Hannah Birch Carl, Sound Design; Liz Weston, Costume Design; Joe D’Emilio, Lighting Design.
